Assistant Professor Materials Modelling

 

The Department of Mechanical Engineering of the School of Engineering and Architecture of Fribourg (HEIA-FR) offers a practice-based engineer education with a specialization in plastics processing. The Plastics Innovation Competence Center (PICC) leads the research and development activities in this field. The PICC is an interdisciplinary research center of several HEIA-FR institutes (Chemtec, iRAP, iCoSys, iTEC), focussed on bridging the gap between academia and plastics industry. It offers innovative solution to foster a circular nature inspired economy. It brings together chemistry, plastics processing, product design, data analytics and materials modelling.

 

Job Description

The main objective of the position is the advancement and application of multi-scale materials
modelling in support of industrial product development and decision making. It entails the
integration and combined use of discrete and continuum materials modelling as well as data
driven modelling.
The teaching activities connected to this position are in the field of plastics engineering/
processing and product performance simulation. Lectures are in French or German.
The candidate works in close collaboration with the PICC director to develop and advance the
use of materials modelling in the industry.

Mission and Scope of Activities

  • Lecture to graduate and undergraduate students in the field of plastics engineering/ processing and product performance simulation
  • Propose, set-up and participate in research projects (local, national, European, international) dealing with advanced discrete and continuum materials modelling to address industrial challenges
  • Propose, set-up and participate in research programs (local, national, European, international advancing topics relating to the circular economy with leading universities and industry where materials modelling can be applied
  • Participate in the management of the institute for Applied Plastics Research (iRAP)
  • Collaborate with other institutes to set up a computational framework and an appropriate infrastructure (software – hardware)
  • Build up a materials modelling network with industry and academia

Your profile

  • PhD or Master in material sciences, mechanical engineering or soft matter physics
  • 5 years of industrial experience with the use of materials modelling
  • Understanding of the physics and mathematics of continuum and discrete modelling, model integration, and multiscale modelling
  • Capable of translating industry challenges in materials modelling solutions
  • Good knowledge of plastic processing and numerical methods
  • Experience with model development and use of commercial software
  • Interest in teaching and student supervision in labs or projects
  • Experience with research funding and project management
  • Fluency (spoken and written) in English, and proficiency in French and German
