Objectives
The European Materials Modelling Council was installed to foster the exploitation of atomistic simulations and materials modelling software by the European industry. This effort includes measures to accelerate the transformation of materials modelling software mainly developed by academic researchers into software tools, which could be readily used by industrial end users. Currently, materials modelling software ranges from programs written by Ph.D. students and post-doctoral researchers to commercially supported comprehensive software platforms.
In this context, license models selected in the course of the code development play an important role regarding the deployment of software and the acceptance of materials modelling software by commercial companies. This expert meeting will address the aforementioned issues especially with respect to open source and commercially distributed software.
Outcome – Report
The expected outcome of this Expert Meeting will be a report on the strengths and pitfalls of different models and recommendations to increase the impact of materials modelling in the European industry. This will be achieved by impulse talks by leaders in the field and by focused discussions.
Report published FEB 2019 by Volker Eyert, Kurt Stokbro & Erich Wimmer
Discussion topics and questions
- What are the industrial requirements for materials modelling software and which license models are preferred by industry?
- What type of distribution and license model are you using and why?
- To which extent do you see the priorities and goals of academic software developers and industrial needs aligned?
- What do you believe is the best way to increase the uptake of materials modelling software by industry?
- Who should pay for software development?
- How should support be organized and financed?
- Who should determine software development priorities?
- What complementarity do you see between academic software development and commercially supported software?
