Within the 2019 eSSENCE-Multiscale Modelling Meeting, June 3-5, 2019 at Uppsala, Sweden a special feature will be the European Materials Modelling Council-supported workshop on
“Materials and molecular modelling in the 21st century: Physics-based and data-driven?“
Multiscale modelling (coupling & linking of models) is a central theme in molecular and materials modelling of complex systems, and it is also a central theme of this meeting. However, currently there also much hope and excitement about big data and machine learning in materials and molecular modelling, and about the opportunities that these approaches may bring. Therefore the sub-theme of this meeting is physics-based and data-driven modelling. How can physics-based insight and data-driven analysis best work together and how can the combination enhance multiscale modelling?
The objective of this meeting is therefore to collect experts who will share their experiences and results in presentations and discussions of the two themes of the meeting. Concrete examples of success stories as well as model(ling) challenges and bottlenecks will help us formulate the next Roadmap of the European Materials Modelling Council. Thus areas in need of development and resources need to be identified.
